Hours after Sanjay Raut, a Member of Parliament from Shiv Sena (UBT), was found guilty in a defamation lawsuit initiated by Medha Somaiya, the spouse of former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, a magistrate court in Mumbai granted him bail and suspended his sentence on Thursday, enabling him to pursue an appeal.

Judicial Magistrate Aarti A. Kulkarni approved the suspension of the sentence for a period of 30 days and granted bail to the Rajya Sabha MP. Additionally, Magistrate Kulkarni mandated that the fine of Rs 25,000 imposed on Raut be paid to the complainant, Medha, in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The comprehensive details of the court’s order are yet to be released.

Raut, through his legal representative, submitted a bail application along with a request to suspend the sentencing in order to facilitate his appeal.

Earlier that day, the court convicted Raut under Section 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), sentencing him to 15 days of imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs 25,000.

The case stemmed from a complaint lodged by Medha, a professor of organic chemistry, who alleged that Raut made defamatory and false statements about her on April 15 and April 16, 2022, which were published in various newspapers. She provided documents and video evidence asserting that Raut had made these statements to media outlets.

Medha also requested an unconditional apology and a permanent injunction against Raut, prohibiting him from disseminating, circulating, or publishing any defamatory material about her in the future.

In her complaint, she highlighted that an article in the Sena’s official newspaper, Saamana, accused the Somaiyas of a “toilet scam” within the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation. She contended that the allegations presented in the article, as well as subsequent media coverage, were baseless and intended to damage her reputation.
