The alliance between the Congress and the National Conference has successfully surpassed the halfway threshold, securing 49 out of 90 seats in the Assembly elections, thereby positioning itself to form the government. Among these, the National Conference has claimed 42 seats, the Indian National Congress has obtained 6, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has won 1 seat. Following a robust performance in the Jammu and Kashmir elections, Farooq Abdullah of the National Conference declared, “Omar Abdullah will be the Chief Minister of J&K.”
The assembly elections, covering 90 constituencies, were conducted in three phases on September 18, September 25, and October 1, marking the first such elections in a decade. This election cycle is particularly significant as it is the first instance of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which resulted in the bifurcation of the former state into the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The three-phase elections achieved a voter turnout of 63.88%, according to the Election Commission of India.
