In accordance with established protocol, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, who is approaching retirement, has put forth the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna, the second most senior judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor for the position of Chief Justice of India.
Chief Justice Chandrachud has formally communicated this recommendation to the Union Government. He is set to retire on November 10, 2024. Should the Union Government endorse Chief Justice Chandrachud’s suggestion, Justice Khanna will assume the role of the 51st Chief Justice of India. His tenure as Chief Justice would last approximately seven months, concluding on May 13, 2025. Justice Khanna was appointed to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019.
