During her campaign in Wayanad, Kerala, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra recounted a touching anecdote about Mother Teresa. She mentioned at an election gathering that the revered humanitarian had come to her home several months following the assassination of her father, Rajiv Gandhi, and encouraged her to dedicate herself to serving the underprivileged.
I would like to express my deep gratitude for the affection I have received here. A few days ago, I visited to submit a nomination paper. Upon my arrival, I paused to engage in conversation with several individuals, one of whom was a member of the Army. He mentioned that his mother wished to meet me but was unable to walk, so I made my way to their home. When I arrived, she embraced me as if I were her own child. I can sincerely say that I felt no distinction between her and my own mother. In that moment, I truly felt as though I had a mother here in Wayanad. This is the warmth you have instilled in me, she remarked during the meeting.
Priyanka Gandhi expressed that her inspiration to collaborate with Mother Teresa’s organization stemmed from her profound admiration for the humanitarian. She recounted a poignant memory: “When she presented me with a rosary to give to my mother, I was transported back to my feelings at the age of 19. My father had recently passed away, and several months later, Mother Teresa visited our home to see my mother. Due to a fever, I remained confined to my room. She entered, placed her hand on my head, and gently took my hand, placing a rosary in it. She invited me to join her in her work. After a span of five to six years, I began working alongside her sisters, where my responsibilities included teaching children, cleaning bathrooms, and preparing meals. This experience deepened my understanding of their struggles, the essence of service, and the strength of community support. I witnessed the community’s solidarity during a landslide in Wayanad, where everyone came together to assist one another. It filled me with pride to see such courage among you all,” she remarked.
