According to Arvind Kejriwal, Diwali is primarily a celebration of illumination, and the pollution resulting from fireworks has detrimental effects, especially on young children.
In response to the continued prohibition of fireworks in Delhi during the Diwali festival, Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party, emphasized on Wednesday that this restriction is not based on religious grounds, but is instead aimed at safeguarding public health.
During a press conference, the former Chief Minister of Delhi underscored that Diwali is primarily a celebration of light, while the pollution generated by fireworks has enduring detrimental effects, particularly on children.
He asserted that the issue transcends religious boundaries, emphasizing that the essence of the festival lies in promoting light rather than smoke. He also highlighted the necessity of prioritizing health over tradition in the context of pollution.
“The Supreme Court and high courts have indicated that, considering the pollution, we should refrain from using firecrackers and instead illuminate diyas. This festival is meant to celebrate light, not firecrackers. By choosing not to use firecrackers, we are not doing anyone a favor; we are acting in the interest of ourselves and our families. The pollution we create will ultimately affect our children, so this is not a matter of Hindu or Muslim. The well-being of every individual is paramount.”
